An intimate refined hotel with a relaxed ambience
Ellerman House Cape Town
This grand Edwardian estate is one of the city’s most exclusive addresses and for ample reason. Elevated on an upscale seaside Bantry Bay slope the views of the Atlantic ocean are sensational. The lawns, terrace, and majestic palms sprawl out in this glamorous seaside beauty with the desired charm of a ‘Relais & Châteaux’. Its sumptuous seclusion at such a lofty height sets the tone to savour all the simple pleasures of this intimate and special hotel, from enjoying fine art and vintage wine to alfresco dining with the crashing sounds of the tide.
Location
In the hilly seaside suburb of Bantry Bay, on Kloof Road, Lion’s Head Mountain, the hotel is located on one of the most expensive properties on the continent. Right on the sunset-facing Atlantic seaboard, you have a beautiful stretch of beaches beginning at Clifton up to Llandudno and beyond. It’s an easy 10-minute drive to the V&A Waterfront, 15 minutes to the city centre, just a half-hour to the Constantia Winelands, and the same to the airport, making this a convenient picturesque location, ideal for exploring the city.
Style & features
In the century-old indigenous botanical gardens of the estate sits the purpose-built private gallery of fine art spanning over two centuries. It is there for your perusal with the help of the hotel’s iPad app. or perhaps better, the in-house art guide, Talita Swarts. The artwork inspires much of the decor and its footprints can be seen throughout the hotel. Decorated with antiques and much of the prized works, the hotel has a classic-feel punctuated by bold colour choices and aqua hues.

Ellerman House rooms
There are 13 individual-style boutique guest rooms and suites in the house, and three to five in each of the two villas. Enormous bay windows and fireplaces in some rooms; glamourous vintage chandeliers, art and antiques; and marble en-suite bathrooms have the feel of a luxurious seaside home. While the views of the bay or lush botanical gardens are sublime and make the bedrooms feel irresistible for lounging in all day. They come with private terraces except for the superior and classic house rooms; underfloor heating and aircon; and a well-stocked bar; besides the usual in-room amenities.
Suites with their lounge and dining rooms offer great seclusion for couples, while the more modern Deluxe Spa rooms are best for couples checking in together as they share a patio and infinity pool.
Ellerman House villas
The multi-level villas are decidedly more contemporary and minimalist in decor. Decked with private patios, infinity pools and ocean views, they cater to an uber-glam seaside escape for families or groups of friends. They allow for between two and six people depending on the villa. Rooms look out onto the ocean and the Twelve Apostles mountain.
Cuisine
Much like the art, wines and location of this family hotel, the dishes are fresh, vibrant creations inspired by Cape Malay spices and organic fruits and vegetables. A gourmet breakfast buffet includes home-made preserves, granola, fresh fruits and cereals, followed by a delicious hot meal. Dining in the restaurant areas is relaxed with somewhat muted tones given the restricted access to outside visitors and children. And the villa guests enjoy private dining with their own chef on hand and a fully stocked walk-in cold room.
And if that didn’t quite hit the spot then you can always wander into the kitchen pantry’s ‘guilty corner’ at any time for delicious snacks and treats prepared daily. These are especially welcome between meals or out on your escapades around the town.
