Not your average resort, Finolhu is a fresh take on Maldivian luxury and comes with a few quirky surprises. Location

You get there on a breathtaking half-hour seaplane journey from Malé airport. Very conveniently located in a different time zone, two hours ahead of Male, you can enjoy slow starts to the day with the sunrise only after 7 am. Situated in the Baa atoll, needless to say, the marine life and diving are spectacular. And it is only five minutes away from its sister Club Med island, Kani and 30 minutes from Amilla by boat. 

Style

With its ecologically independent design, Finolhu produces its freshwater from a desalination plant, manages its waste removal and is one hundred per cent solar-powered thanks to an expansive 6,224 sqm (67,000 sq ft) of solar panels. The solar grids are also beautifully integrated into the island’s design best seen when they light up at night.

The resort’s funky retro style is a throwback to the elaborate 70s where the pastel VW food trucks on the beach and “futuristic” double-storey beach bar with its resident mermaid, aren’t out of place. Villas are decorated in chic summery tones with a playful mix of oriental garden stools, upcycled suitcase coffee tables, Moorish geometric patterns and carved wood dividing screens.

The island is quite a social space once you surface from your luxury villa nest. Though, it also offers ample opportunity for discovering the island at your own pace, quiet solitude or seclusion with your loved ones.

Diving

Passionate ‘dive butlers’ of the Marine HUB (Home of the Underwater Biosphere) host unforgettable diving and snorkelling experiences where you might learn a thing or two. The menu ranges from diving at the crack of dawn to sunset fishing with dolphins and trips to the uninhabited Hanifaru Bay, a mecca for diving and underwater photography.

Resort Activities

For your adrenaline-fix, Thunderball has it all from stand-up paddling and surfing to motorized ventures like sea bobbing, wakeboarding, flyboarding and parasailing. There’s also an Oceaneers’ club for kids and teens that arranges supervised marine adventures to suit their specific interests. You can also tailor your experiences to include the likes of cultural trips to neighbouring islands, fishing or simply spending a quiet afternoon on a secluded island.

Food & beverage

The food is varied here starting with the more “rustic” Fish & Crab Shack, about 1,8 km up the sandbank. Whether you walk, swim or get there by boat, is up to you. Either way, you’ll be rewarded at the end with cold spicy prawns or mud crab under the sunshine and a glass of wine. Across all of its eateries, expect a creative and inspired concoction of Asian, Middle Eastern, French, African, and South American flavours, and a restaurant to suit every mood and occasion. Beachside Baa Baa Diner as the name suggests, is for all-day grazing on freshly prepared vegan, fish or meat buffet spreads. Kanusan is dimly-lit fine-dining with an open pavilion of Asian varieties like Vietnamese pho bo or sushi. Then there’s the North Africa inspired Baa Haa Grill with its tagine and mezze servings. 

If ever there was one, the life and the soul of Finolhu must be the Beach Bar which hosts regular beach parties and events alongside top global DJs and performing acts. Get grooving, or chill out on a hammock with a scrumptious snack platter. Meanwhile, the island’s tuck shop, Milk Bar, has all your daytime treats covered from healthy acai bowls and wraps to more indulgent coffees and ice-cream. 

Finolhu Maldives luxury accommodation

The 125 beach, pool or ocean villas are uniquely-styled and spacious, some with a private pool. The beach villas offer the freedom of a private beach and many ‘toes in the sand’ moments. Ocean and lagoon villas have the ever-present allure of dreamy blue aqua shades as if sailing on a yacht, with direct plunge access. They are vibrantly coloured and well-kitted with patios or furnished sundecks, luxurious bathrooms, king beds (one extra bed available), minibar, wine fridge (in some) and in-room safe, while the two-bedroom villas have two spacious master bedrooms. You can style up with ones that have hammocks and outdoor rain showers. 

Funky details are added for your amusement like your bedside ‘champagne’ call phone, the vintage postcards with your in-room information printed on it and dressing gowns with the word ‘Rockstar’ across the back.
